My old transmission is wanting to run a little hotter than normal, I think. Is there an additive that I can add, or can I just drain the oil that is in the pan and refill whith synthetic fluid? Or should I go all the way and have a tran shop drain and refill the entire system? '99 PSD, automatic, 792,000 mi.
792K miles, Holy crap! You might hold the record for the most miles on this site??
Do you have a trans temp gage? IF so, what is the temp?
Is it shifting OK?
Usually just changing the fluid won't reduce your temps IMO, even switching to SYN won't lower the temps, but SYN ATF can take the heat better than dino oil. A trans shop won't get any more oil out of it than you will. Drain the converter and flush out the cooler(s) will get just about all of oil out of it.
Na older trucks have a drain plug in the TC under the inspection plate. But you dont have to manually drain it the pump will flush it for you http://www.7point3.com/Writeups/TransFlush.aspx
amiller. Thanks for the great link. I will be doing this soon. Bought my 2001 in January
with only 34,000 on it but want to change all the fluids since I do not know how
often anything was done.
I can't speak for everyone else, but if you've gotten 792,000 miles out of your transmission and engine, I'd say do whatever you think is best. You've obviously done pretty well so far. I'm sitting in the low 200's so I would follow your advice.
