Looking for those who have successfully reprogrammed, tuned, modified intake/exhaust, changed induction method and have quantitative gains in performance and milage for those mods...I would rather do the needed changes once to get better milage as the performance I think is good. (that's what I say now though!...) I have thought about supercharging and headers with high flow cat(s) and the necessary fuel management upgrades to get the most out it. This will, no doubt, improve the "performance" but if driven nicely, should the "milage" increase as well? Should a guy just open up the exhasut and put on a cold air intake and call it good? OR...? BTW: this may be towing in the future as well. I would expect to come in around the 8,000 lb mark with what I am thinking of today...
Supercharger, CIA, headers..... man, that alot of upgades and $$$$$$ to be droppin' in a new truck. For the towing part, as long as you have the towing package you'll be all set. After all it is an Expy. I just came back from the keys last month and pulled my 7,000lbs. TT with no problem. 3,000 round trip from CT.
Now for the "Quantitive mileage gains" I hear that the turbinater, fuel magnet, some magic dust or the such will fulfill your desire to drop cash .
Botom line is the truck is not a sipper but a guzzler. If mileage is what you are looking for then an Expy wouldn't fit the bill. All the above mentioned upgrades will not noticibly increase MPG. The only way to do that is to drive like an ol' lady. I tried it to see how high MPG I could get. I guess the "how high is realitive. Is 19 MPG on the highway high? That all I could get consistantly. Tire pressure, and the weight of your right foot have all the MPG gains.
Sorry for the long post but every guy wants more power and better MPG and that won't happen with the Expy. But that's OK. If you can afford an Expy, you certainly afford the gas
Yeah, right. I thought the "vortex" intake air charger might be a good buy, didn't you catch that add??? And I hear that platinum particles (added into) your fuel help to make combustion more efficient too...and last but not least- SPLIT-FIRE spark plugs!!!
The obvious is true. keep my foot out of it.
19 MGP sounds good to me at this point, I beleive we averaged 17-18 on a trip to central Oregon last week (some mountain driving- about 30%), all this is still better than our outgoing '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 which would only get 18 if the roof rack was removed, tires set to 50 psi, and 90 octane used.
Put the mountain bikes on top and tow a 1200 lb. trailer...14 MPG. UGH.
Thanks for the laugh, and insight back to reality...
Tuning on the 5.4L 3V can be manipulated to have substantial gains in economy. The variable cam timing can be used to overcome alot of the pumping losses and gain fuel mileage. Don't waste any money on those "cold" air induction systems-NONE of them actually gain you any power-any and all gains you see from the manufacturers claims are from skewed MAF signals shifting the air/fuel lean.
