o.k. i need some help with this one guy's. I've got an 88 full size with a 351, just got it yesterday. the idle was set at about 1000 in gear, so I turned it down to around 800 in gear. Now when it's at idle in gear i have no oil pressure. If I put it in neutral it comes up to about a quarter of the way on the guage, drop it back in gear and the guage drops to nothing. before I brought the idle down the oil pressure was fine. It only does this after it warms up. Did I set the idle too low by chance? by the way I forgot to mention that it's an automatic.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Feb-02 AT 10:23 PM (EST)]Put a mechanical gauge on it and check to see EXACTLY what the pressure is running at.
It will drop if the crankshaft & Camshaft Bearings are
wearing out.
You can try a heavier oil like 20-50 or go to a straight weight oil.
You can try removing the sending unit to see if there is a small piece of engine sludge blocking the hole in it.
Other than check for exact pressure at different RPM's & re-building
the engine, That's all you can do for now.
