Front Hubs
Front Hubs
I am having a problem right now. I feels as though the left front hub is engaging. I have a 1993, 351 with auto hubs. If I put it in 4-wheel drive then take it out, go back 20 feet or so then it disengages. The 4-wheel light does not come on nor does it feel like it is in 4-wheel drive. It may be fine for a few blocks then it will engage again when I hit a bump or pothole, sometimes on a flat surface also. It just started doing this yesterday and the hubs were repacked about 10,000 miles ago, and the mechanic said that they looked and worked fine. I use the 4wheel drive at least a few times a month and have never had a problem. Does anyone have any answers, or suggestions with what they might think it is? Should I replace the hubs with manual hubs?

I took apart my hubs to change the wheel bearings and turn the rotors, and the hubs on the passenger side just fell out in pieces. I check with Ford, and it would cost me around $250 per side for the new parts, as they have updated the design. I opted for the $90 pair of manual Warn premuim hubs, and love them.
If I feel I will need 4WD before I leave the driveway, I simply lock the hubs and drive around in 2WD. Then all I have to do is push the button and I have 4WD. When the conditions clear up, I unlock the hubs.

I went with the Mile Marker Supreme hubs for $69 a pair from O'Reilly's. They are stainless steel and have a lifetime warrantee. Get rid of the auto hubs and go with a good set of manual. There is a good article on the Warn vs MileMarkers on off-road.com.
