Hello new member here was wandering on a 62 would up and down slack in the wheel be the steering gear bearing that is what it is reffered to in LMC truck the side to side is tight thank You for your help Allan
You mean the steering column shaft pulls in and out of the column vertically? Take a look at the hold down clamp just under the bottom lip of the dash. If the rubber is gone or in pieces that might cause the whole column to move up and down. If the shaft is pulling out of the column then the steering gear box halves could loose/cracked or the internal bearings are bad. I can't see the shaft just pulling out along its vertical axis if there is no lateral looseness. There are two sets of bearings that hold the shaft at the bottom and top of the column with a split cone to center it in them. Worse case you'll need a new to the truck steering gear/column which may cost you an arm and leg. If that is needed cut your losses and install an aftermarket kit for a $150 more that allows for you to update the steering components.
the up and down is from the floor to the headliner has no side to side at all the steeering for the most is nice and tight have installed new kingpins and tirerods and so on the truck has a set of 90 modle stock mags with 275/60/15 on it and the suspension is i would guess close to a 1 1/4 ton has 7 leafs on the front and 13 on the back
Then check the column to dash mount hardware and rubber. If that is loose it will cause what you are describing. It take a 1/2" combo wrench to tighten it down, on mine that is.
