I have a 72 f100. I am not going for the "cherry" look. Just a nice looking truck. I don't seem to really enjoy the look of the stock instrument cluster. I noticed a set up from a f600 on ebay. The guy says it will work. I just wanted to ask the gifted minds of this forum. Will it?
The problem with the F600 gauges is they are not a standard size so you can't replace them with any cool aftermarket units if something quits working. Because of that I decided to build my own with standard size after market guages. I found a base truck guage cluster on e-bay. It works best because it is metal. I cut out the middle and made my own insert out of aluminum and cut holes in the aluminum for the gauges. I used button head stainless cap screws to mount the aluminum insert so it looks very "machine" like. Take a look at my gallery. I also painted the metal bezel with wrinkle black paint and I think it looks real good. I was even thinking of making a few more and selling them on e-bay. Not sure if there would be enough interest though.
DarkWolf40, I really like the look of your cluster. Simple and clean. I happen to have a cluster I found in the local bone yard that I was thinking of putting in mine 'cause it is all gauges, but, after looking at what you did, I know what to do with it now. Although it's plastic, I think I can get it close to how yours turned out. It's a matter of when I get the $$$. I just keep plotting and planning...................
it may not be what you're looking to do or whatever, but if you have a decent original plastic one that is just worn like mine was, i just took mine to a local airbrush painter and had him paint it black and silver and it looks better than original to me. dont know the website name, but google "haneline" products, they make a cluster specifically for these years with round guages thats pretty nice also
I just added a pic of my airbrushed cluster if you want to have a look, my gallery is kinda messed up, i made a new gallery but i guess i forgot that i had one, but the pic of my cluster is in one of them
Dave, did you just ditch the whole cluster and fill the opening with the panel?
Actually sold the original mint cluster to a friend who is doing a restoration on his '71, then reshaped the opening to get the correct angle on the gauges so you can read them while driving. The aluminum is a scrap piece that I bought from a job shop here in town. I used my mill to cut out the gauge openings, but a drill press with a hole saw will do the exact same thing. When the panel fit the opening and the gauges fit the panel, I wet sanded the aluminum with 400, 600, 800, 1500, 2000 grit paper then some mothers and a mini buffer to make the aluminum shine....
