Tire Size Translation

Could someone translate for me tire sizes: 265/75 = 30 in. tall by 10 in wide etc.

I want to buy a tire/wheel package for my 2003 F250 SD V10 and I would like to buy a 4" lift to install myself. But, looking at tire/wheel packages in maddening.

HELP!!!

The best way of finding this type of information is to go to the manufacturers website. As two tires of the same size from different manufacturers can actually measure different. Other than that all I can say is you have to be real carefull when choosing your tire/rim combo. With the leafs up front there is no room for error.

The first number is the width of the tire in mm. The second number is the section modulus or something like that. It tells you what percentage of the width is equal to the sidewall height. You multiply the width by the percentage and then double it and add the rim diameter to get the actual tire diameter. For example a 265/75R16 tire would be figure out as follows:

265/25.4=10.43" wide

265 x 0.75 x 2 = 397.5/25.4 = 15.65 + 16 = 31.65" diameter

So in english units it is pretty close to a 31x10.5r16

On edit - PowerstokeHD brings up a good point though, always double check the tire manufacturers dimensions because they sometimes round the numbers really strange. But to get the general size the calculations I used above will work.

.

You have it in your calculation there, but don't forget to highlight that to get from millimeters to inches, you divide the mm's by 25.4 (just in case anyone was wondering "where the heck does 25.4 come in" )

Good point TX. I'm an engineer so I'm constantly doing that conversion (half the time in my head) so I end up assuming everyone else knows it. Same with going from lbs to kg (2.2046), people always think I'm strange when I do that in my head.

Thanks for the help guys, that's just what I was looking for. I think I will do myself a favor and make up a cheat sheet so I have it readily available when shopping.

Beerstalker, you still may be strange though
