When converting from main bolts to main studs, do you have to have the block line bored? or can you just switch to studs, been hearing that you need to have it line bored but i really do not see why you would?
Yes you should. The clamping forces are greater with studs, causing bore distortion. Same goes for head studs vs. bolts. Any machine work should be done with the fasteners that will be used to assemble the engine.
What Pete said is true.............sometimes. You may find out that nothing has changed. You do need to have it checked, then of course, if it needs it, you can have it done. I have run across many situations where it was ok after switching to studs.
if you are just checking the hole for roundness after you torque the cap you can do it with a bore gauge. if you are checking the line bore, straightness or alinment of the maine bearing bores then you need some special stuff. If you still have the bearings that came out of the motor you can check them for abnormal wear patterns.
If you have the old bearings and they look ok I would torque them up and check how round they are with a bore guage and run it if they are round.
Matter of fact....I'm waiting to get my Clevor block back from the shop for a line bore. Had two that were loose and one not 100% straight.
