trans issues

I got a 1990 ford pick-up that i got from a buddy he had it for about a year. when he got it the trans had issues and he just never cared and now that i got it id like to fix it its got an inline 6 with the automatic and over drive. when you stop it does not down shift to first it stays in high gear unless you down it yourselfe. i would like to fix it just now exactly sure what it is. please throw me a hint.

what trans? c6 AOD or E4OD?

c6 - 3 speeds no overdrive

AOD - 4 speeds incl. overdrive, no electronic button on dash

E4OD - 4 speed incl. overdrive, button on dash or end of gear shift to turn on and off overdrive.

start with a filter change and full flush. look underneath for any lose linkage. then post the type of transmission or the door sticker code so we know what you are working with.
