E40D problems, never dealt with one

i have a 96 bronco with very high milage. im pretty sure the transmission is the original and it has finally went out. i have replaced a manual two wheel drive transmission before but never a four wheel drive auto. should i replace the whole transmission, or try to rebuild it (never done that either) how would i learn to rebuild it if that would be the best solution. please dont be shy i am willing to try anything. thanks.

Most pros cringe at the thought of dealing with an E4OD. They are complicated and tempermental. Not impossible mind you but their track record leaves a bit to be desired. I'll tackle most projects on my vehicles but not that one. Personal opinion/suggestion, either leave the rebuild to a pro or just replace it with a reman'd unit. Either way the cost is about the same and its not cheap. I had the one in my 92 rebuilt a few years back for about $2300 and the reman. I priced when the one in the 93 went was about $2500.

Mine from a local trans shop was $950 rebuilt with 6 month warranty with me installing it in my 94 F150 4x4 last fall . And there are remans advertised in Truck trader for about same amount weekly. Check around and do it yourself.

No I pop the top intake . Just to get to top bolt easy. Remove starter and flywheel bolts, loosen bell housing bolts , unplug harness & linkage ,drive shafts, Support trans remove xfer case& cross member , Then remove trans bolt and remove trans .(don't forget tp prop engine up) Rent borrow or steal a tranny jack . Get a helper safety first.

I separate trans and x fer because although its easier to get down in 1 piece you Bronco will have to be propped up so much hight to get it out. And this is heavy item. Get a manual and look it over . Good luck
