Installed, I'd say that was reasonable. your looking at a $1500 system with $700 of labor and custom equipment. Replacing the head unit, 4 speakers, adding an amp or three and some subs gets very expensive.

You should be able to find a local stereo shop or Best buy to add a 2 channel amp and some decent speakers. Figure $150 for the amp and $150 for door speakers, I don't know what they would charge to put it in, but it shouldn't be that much.

You didn't say if you gave the guy a budget you were working with or not. If you just go in and say you want a stereo they are always going to sell you a lot. If you say I have $XXX and I want a stereo they will usually stick somewhere close to your budget, but usually try to sell you a little over.
