Transfer case problem
I have a 1971 F250 4X4, and the transfer case will not stay in 2HI. I can engage it, and it will stay in gear for a while, but inevitably it will pop out, and go into neutral. It does seem to stay in 4HI, no problem. This winter, the shifter was very stiff, and I had to really fight with it to engage it into 4HI and 4LO. Any thoughts as to what the problem/issue is. I'd look at the transfer case mounts first.The rubber cushions will deteriorate and allow the case to twist under load. This in turn pulls on the the shift linkage. Next I would take a look at the linkage itself.Check for wear at the pivot points and see if it's lubed.If all of this stuff checks out then the problem is internal.Hope this helps.
