Rear main seal
Rear main seal
I have just picked up my 96 Bronco for the third time from the dealer. The rear main seal has been the problem all three times. Does anyone know what would be causing the seal to begin to leak after 100- 150 miles. The service dept. at the dealer seems to be stumped. I thought taking it to the dealer to get it fixed would solve the problem.
Thanks in advance

Ghostrider304,
Maybe it is my driving. Maybe its because I can park my truck in the insulated garage and it gets too warm, therefor the temp change when I open the garage door is effecting the seal. (BTW) That means by the way, would that diesel start on a cold morning if it were unplugged? Just wondering.

Could be several causes for premature seal failure. If the engine has high mileage, the original seal may have worn a groove in the crankshaft, causing the new seal to leak. Some engines have a sleeve that can be pressed over the end of the crank to repair this, but I don't know if Ford engines do. If the main bearings have excessive wear, the crankshaft will have too much movement causing the seal to fail (but this condition will result in low oil pressure problems!)Another cause could also be faulty installation (especially if the same tech did the job three times) I hope this gives you a little insight.

You need to buy a new main seal and a bearing saver. Local Murry's and Autozone autoparts normally do not carry the bearing saver's but most speed shops do. The bearing saver takes up the space that has been worn away by your crankshaft.
