I am looking at making an offer on a 1980 F350 for a farm truck. The motor is advertised as a 6 cylinder.
What type of motor would this be? Should I expect it to be guttless. I have a 460 in the back forty that I would consider swapping. Would this be compatible?
As you can see from my post, I am a little green when it comes to mechanics.
The six would likely be a 300 with carb. If you're using the truck for the farm it'll probably be fine. That six has gobs of torque for it's size. If gearing is right it'll keep chugging along plus they're as bulletproof as an engine can be. Won't win any speed races...........
Swapping in the 460 would be an option, but you'll need another tranny or at least bellhousing. The six uses the small bell pattern. Fuel consumption will be twice as much as the six.
351m is the same as a 460 bellhousing. Don't waste your time with a 351m. Don't quickly dismiss the 300 because it only has six cylinders. Try it first.
