Morning everyone, having a problem with my truck, and I'm hoping someone knows what's going on, maybe had this problem. My truck is in NY, and I'm in Germany, but my sister drove it the other day, was stopped at a red light, and when she tried to go, it started skipping, spitting, wouldn't idle. While it was doing this, the check engine light would come on and off. She parked it for a few days. My buddy came to look at it, and it started it up. When he started it, it started fine, drove it for fourty minutes, and ran good. The only thing that he told me was that the check engine light is now on. Anyone else had this problem with thier expy? It is a 97 XLT with the 5.4. Thanks!
Might does the exact same thing randomly and when I did a code scan - it basically told me that I needed to change the coil and or spark plug on my number 3 cylinder.
Right now I am in the process of changing all 8 spark plugs and coils so I will not have to deal with that problem again for a long time!
Have someone drive the truck over to an AutoZone and have them read the fault codes. Write the fault code down and come back here for some reSEARCH. Ask for additional guidance as needed.
Once you know which cylinder is misfiring, you can determine if you want to take it to a shop or if it's a DIY project for someone near the truck.
Most likely, it's a COP failure. A new COP and a sparkplug is less than $60 at AZ, however, several of the cylinders are a PITA to access.
In the event it comes out to be a P0304 (#4 cylinder) fault, check the heater line directly overhead. The connection has a bad history of leaking onto #4 COP and causing it to fail.
Good luck doing this remotely.
Discourage any driving while the misfire is occurring and the CEL is flashing.
