I just found at a local towing yard a 85 or 86 one of the two f250. its 2wd with a 6.9 and a manual for 1500 but im going to offer less depending on how the truck runs. Im just wondering what kind of problems to really look for. So far from what ive read everyone seems to say the 6.9 is better than the 7.3 idi. I talked with a neigbor of mine who knows fords real well and builds race cars he says the thin cylinder walls isn't true for the 7.3 and he says they both are expensive if anything goes wrong. Id just like to get things cleared up. I know diesels cost alittle more than a gas, but from what ive gathered up the idi's are way cheaper than say a old cummins 5.9 in the 93 and prior trucks.

85-87 6.9L is the best platform for rebuilding. The thin cylinder walls on the 7.3L is a reality and makes them throw aways when they grow tired. 6.9L had some issues but easily over come. 7.3L had more issues but still a strong runner until they get tired. I have an 87 6.9L sitting in an engine stand that will be used to replace one of my 7.3L when it is their time to pass on. 1500 is high chew'em down to 800 if you can no more than a grand if it runs nice.
