OK, the stripping around my windshield on my '84 Bronco is running like a faucet. What's the easiest way to fix this? I'd rather not call a glass shop and have it repaired that way. Can I safely remove the chromed trim from the outside and put silicone in the leaky area? How do I remove the trim without bending it beyond repair?
Yeah, you can remove the trim and put silicone over the factory caulking. Expect to buy several tubes if you are going around the whole windshield. Don't try to save money and get the stuff that you put in a caulk gun. It does not work. As far as the trim, I pretty much just pulled mine off and didn't have any problems putting it back on.
You'll need a special tool to remove the mouldings, which you can buy in most auto parts stores (or, at least the larger ones). It has a handle with a "V" shaped end, which can be slid underneath the moulding (parallel to the windshield). The pointed "ends" of the V are slid behind clips which retain the moulding, and then the tool is rocked to one side or another, causing the clip to release the moulding. It's hard to explain, but if you can become familiar (maybe Chilton's has a diagram) with how the clips hang on to the moulding, it will be easy to figure out.
