Need help with buying a Excursion? PLEASE
'm needing a daily driver, with capacity for many kids but also to be used to pull different size trailers and tractors that I will be selling. I don't want to own different vehicles for different tasks. So here is my question I looked on ebay motors and found many Excursions with the 6.0 diesel . Is there so many on there due to a reason? Would this be the vehicle to fit my need. If not what do you suggest. I do perfer a diesel.Thanks to any one to help me!!!!!!

There were some 03 ones. I would get earlier 01s. I didn't and got a later 01 with the powdered metal rods. However, if you don't plan to soup it up past 400HP, you are ok with PMR. Then avoid the 01s unless you are sure the trans has been fixed because some of them have a diode that is a ticking time bomb.

I have an 02 with the 7.3. I think there were some early 03's with the 7.3 PSD. If you get one, make sure you get a rear sway bar if it doesn't already have one. It will handle a whole lot better.

All I can say is the X will handle all your wants and needs. As for the year that is a tough choice. I personaly would say the 7.3 is much better than 6.0. Every year probably has someone with a horror story. My 00 7.3 has been golden to me thus far and still running strong with 145k on it. Some small isssues with fuel pump , cruise control and of course ball joint ( unavoidable on the X ). Just have the truck checked out before buying. I am not a big promoter of purchasing a vehicle on Ebay .

As with anything you have multiple sides of the story...
having had a 02 7.3 that was swapped out by Ford because of all it's problems for an 03 Ex that we loved, but still traded in an 05 Ex (so we'd have the latest and greatest...)
I wouldn't hesitate to get another... but that's just my humble opinion...

I have an early 03 6.0 4x4 and love it. Limited issues with 53,000 miles. I had a 00 with the 7.3 2x4 and loved it. The 00 got over 22mpg on the highway and when they threatened to get rid of the X, I jumped for the 4x4. The 03 started out at 20mpg highway but has gone down to an average of 17mpg these days.
Check the diesel forum for opinions, but remember, many people write that are having problems. As with all vehicles, check it out via warrenty repairs.
