94 ps dies

Hi,
I'm new to this forum as of yesterday. What I've read seems to be good helpful info and tips. I do all my own repairs on my 94 psd. I have had it for 7 yrs. and can always figure it out by testing each component with VOM. It is slow but works. I have never been able to retrieve codes even with a high dollar reader.
It has reference voltage, but never sends codes. I notice a lot of talk about CPS going out. Is it a constant fault or temperature related? Mine will run fine when cold till it reaches normal operating temp. then dies suddenly. It won't start till it cools down 2-3 minutes, then fires right off. It always runs about 1/3 way across "normal " on temp. guage. Now it goes to about 1/2 way and dies.
It does'nt appear to be getting hot enough to shut down, but could be wrong.
Any help is appreciated.

First, let me say" Welcome Aboard". CPS failure is not heat related. With a failed CPS, the tact will not regester. I would guess that you have worn IPR o-rings. When the oil is cold it is thick enough that it does not leak by the o-rings, but once the oil warms up it by-passes the o-rings and you are not getting enough pressure in the HPOP system. Others will be along the may have more or a different insight.

Thanks for the idea about the o-rings. Would it take longer than 2-3 minutes for the oil to cool enough to thicken? I was leaning towards a relay cutting out or a temperature sensor. Your suggestion is a good place to start though. It will idle all day, but running at road rpms, only about 5-10 minutes. I appreciate the help.

I agree CPS failure is not heat related, but it does weird things, so I would not rule it out. I would get one and throw it in, test fire it, if it is not the CPS then you have a spare. IPR o-rings going bad I would think would cause idle to get rougher running as the oil warms up. Have your tried changing the thermo stat ? My truck runs low end of normal on the temp, but the guages are not reliable or accurate. Not sure if there is a safety high tem cutoff.

Thanks for the help. I already changed the CPS this morning before checking the site. That is what it was. Ran perfect all day today. Apparently they can start acting up after engine heats up. I had found some other references to stalling when warm and then cranking up after a few minutes. It said the constant expansion and cooling finally gets them and sometimes they only act up when hot. Hope it helps someone else down the road. Thanks again.
