agree, Ranger1F150, the heads are coming off.

but Dan, how are only the rear cylinders affected by having an incorrect type Tstat? flow through the block is not affected, only the flow at the Tstat/bypass is affected. hot coolant gets recirculated to the entire engine, i don't understand the "rear cylinders" thing?

With the wrong Tstat, hot coolant is recirculated through the block, bypassing the radiator. This affects the rear cylinders the most. It usually causes head gasket failure in the rear cylinders.

There is a link somewhere that describes this. Maybe someone has that link.

Yeah those are a good ideas.

Also while I am in there I might as well check the rear main seal. The oil pan leaks a little, not sure if its the pan, gasket, drain plug, or rear main seal. It would be easy to fix that while its out.

I am trying not to get "might as well syndrone", but really it make sense to do as much as I can now and do it right. While I am doing the heads I "might as well" :

replce the oil pump
timing set
rear main seal
find and fix oil pan leak
rebuild the bottom end with 400M parts
put in a bigger Cam
swap intakes and put on a 4V Carb

The right thermostat is a robertshaw #333-192. Those auto store units can cause problems.

Ranger1F150, you "might as well" figure out what happened in the first place to cause whatever problem it is that you're having with the rear two cylinders?

Also here is another little something.

It had a metal hard line that went from the intake manifold to the smog pump. It was rusted really bad and must have broke off. Well it looked like the PO tried to get what was left of it out and it was rusted in there pretty good and he never got it out. So there was this open hole in the intake and air was blowing out of there. I plugged it will silicon just to see if that would make the miss go away. It didn't so that was when I did the compression test.

I wonder if this massive air leak could have cause it to go lean and burn up the valve.

That sounds very good, but what does 'everything' include, and what is not included?
