HAd to rebulid the carb (86 F150 4x2 I6 300 Carter 1BBL YFA) due to leaking accelerator pump and dumping too much gas. Put the carb on today put some sea foam in the tank and treated the intake as per directions. Engine runs, however, there is not much power, on the freeway top speed was 74 mph, C6 transmission. Some times it sputters at any given speed and seems like a miss, New plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Some times at idle it runs smooth then some times it runs rough. Carb overhaul fixed one problem now there seems to be another. Have yet to check timing but that is coming soon. I dont think its timing related due to the randomness of the sputters. Well I hope some one has some Ideas. Thanks

Well, per my manual, what's left to check for "Lack of power" and "Engine misses troughout driving range" would be:
Fuel filter/fuel line clogged (I assume you changed when you did the carb...maybe do it again?)
Incorrect ignition timing
Faulty emission system components
Low or uneven compression
Weak/faulty ignition coil/system
Vacuum leaks
----------------------------
On an '86 - and considering what you've done - I'd wager it's a vacuum or emissions issue. I believe there's a computer that will putz things up pretty badly when it's getting bad signals.
BVA,
Thanks for the tips. Gotta buy a timing light today. Will check compression too. I dread messing with the emisson and or computer as I am not very good in those areas. Being that it has a computer, wouldnt it have a light or some thing for a code? Coil should be cheap enough, I did read once that a weak spark could do the same thing. Well I am off to the store. Thanks a gain for the post
Joe
