2001 F150 tailgate removal

Hello Jeff and Welcome to the forum! 
I assume a 01 is similar to a 98 and removing the tailgate is pretty easy. Look at where the cables attach to the bed (tailgate is down). Pull the clips so that they will unhook from the posts. Be sure you are holding the tailgate because once both cables are unhooked the tailgate will fall on the bumper. Once the cables are off, move the tailgate up to about 1/2 way. Lift up on the right side and the right side should come free. Pull the rest of the gate to the right and you will then be holding the whole thing. You may want a person to help hold it the first time so you can safely find out how much it weighs.

The gate lifts off the right post but will not slide off the left post. I have had the wife push torward the right while I pull but the gate will not move off the post. Any ideas on how to free this?

You have to wiggle it and pull hard. It took 2 of us to get my gate off the 1st. time. The left end is simply round. It gets a little worn in which makes it hard to remove. Spray a little wd-40 in the hinge. Good luck.
