I was under the rear end of my truck over the weekend, and noticed some places that have not been POR-15'd like the rest of the underside. Got on the fone and found some at my local Sherwin Williams auto paint store. They have 1 quart. 47$$ + tax. uh-uh. I want the stuff, but have a limit on how much shafting I will take. That's too much shafting. I thought; I wonder how a black satin Rust-oleum would work? How bout it? anyone used it on undercarriage?
I have been using Zero Rust in both brush-on and rattle can. I am very pleased with it. Sticks really well to bare metal and/or rusted areas. I found it at a local autobody supply store. Google Zero Rust and you'll be able to find distributors local to you. I don't recall what I paid, but it wasn't nearly as expensive as POR 15.
I used Rust-OLeum on my F-2's frame, it didn't hold up too well but I wasn't going for show and I didn't have the money back then for something like POR-15. There are other cheaper products out there that claim to the same as POR-15. Do a search of this forum on POR-15, you'll find a few posts.
My old truck certainly isn't show either but I wanted to be sure since I am living here in the rust belt that the rust would not come back soon. I think the money I spent for POR was well spent.
I am trying Zero Rust on my 49.
It is still under construction, and could be for a few more years, but I have spray painted the back half of the frame, after some basic sanding and wire brush to remove the worst of the rust.
Eastwood has both a rust encapsulator system and a Chassis paint (regular and extreme duty versions) and I have used both with great results. The chassis paint has held up well on Jeep frames used off-road. I did my trailer frame with the rust encapsulator and chassis paint on top, so far great results with several long road trips on it.
The chassis paint goes on well over cleaned metal and is $29.99 per qt. plus shipping. Rust encapsulator is same price but they recommend a top coat.
Not much money savings, but it is an alternative. I live 20 minutes from the store, so I am not sure about shipping costs. Also, they have a half price bargain table, so I just go there and see what is on sale. They also have a lot of other automotive tools. www.eastwood.com
