I understand that tapping noises are almost impossible to explain, but I'm going to give it a shot. My '93 Bronco (351) just flipped 80,000 miles and has developed a tap. This tap only lasts for the first 5 seconds or so, and only 1 time out of 6 or 7 starts. Ive gotten answers ranging from, "its just a Ford engine, it'll run like that for another 80,000 miles", too "o-my god, park the thing, cause its gonna blow up".
It definitely sounds like the passenger side of the engine, but low. Could the starter be going out, and staying engaged momentarily? Would a bent push rod, or lifter be making the noise all of the time?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Mar-02 AT 07:42 PM (EST)]I agree, it definatley sounds like a lifter giving up. They will sound deep in the engine because they are about in the center of the block. If the starter were hanging up, I think it would make more of a grinding sound.

I have a 93 bronco with the 351 and i have the same tapping aor exaust leak. mine does it when its cold mainly but does not seam to go away. I think it is a exaust leak, i have heard other people say they have blown out ext. gaskets. PLEASE let me know. costacasa at excite.com
I talked to the guys that fix our city cars, and they gave me the following advise:
Move from 10w-30 to 10w-40 motor oil, and add a can or "RESTORE", to the crank case. So far there has been no further tapping noise, except for the loose interior door panel (which irritated me, cause I thought it was something else in the motor, until I hit the door out of anger, and it stopped.)
Any suggestions on the kind of cam and lifter set to replace mine with. Currently its stock, and I really dont need anything radical.
