OK a week ago I bought my 78 F150 4x4 w/ 351m and C6. The steering had a ton of play in it, it was hard to keep it in one lane going down the hiway. I went ahead and let my local shop put a new steering gear box in it, new tie rod and basically go through the whole front end. Well its alot better now, but still too much play. The mechanic says the slop is in the column and we need to either buy a new column, get one at a junkyard etc. Does anyone here have any other ideas?? Should I go ahead and try the column? I spent alot of $$ already on the gear box hoping that would solve it. Im in Platte City MO if any one knows any one close that could help.......
Have you checked the "wrag-joint" in the steering rod itself. It's just above the steering box.
Also have you tried to adjust the steering box? Looking down at the box you'll see a nut with a head sticking through. Loosen the nut, turn the screw that runs through the nut, just a little, then snug the nut. That will take play out of the steering box.

try turning the wheel back and forth with the truck cut off standing still...if you use a buddy you cant find out real quick if its the box, or in the shaft. You should be able to see exactly where the play is....if the input shaft of the box doesnt move with you turning, its in the column, if the input splines move, but not the pitman arm, its the box (backlash)....if it all moves, just feels loose while driving, you have too much negative caster.
Pretty sure its in the column. I was looking at lmc truck.com on page 93 the bottom half of the page is the 78-79 column Im not sure what parts I need just part #19??? thanks for the advice !!!!
