I have been trying to work the bugs out of my 2003 7.3L and so far it hasn't worked. I have tried nearly everything that 4 different mechanics have suggested. Problem: If the truck sits for 8-9 hours (it hasn't been below 70 in a week and a half), it will start and ROMP really loud a few times and blow out a little bit of smoke and then it will stay started. The big deal is that I will start to take off and I can have the pedal to the floor and I can only go about 5 MPH until about 10 seconds of putting, something will just kick in and it will just take off. After something kicks in, it will run fine until it sits for a while. Below is a list of things I have done so far:
New Starter
2 New Batteries
New Controller
New Glow Plugs
GPR Tested fine
EOT Sensor
Intake Air Temperature Sensor
Camshaft Position Sensor
Fuel Filter Heater
What else could this be? The oil levels are fine. Could it be some hoses clogged somewhere? If so, how would I go about cleaning them all out?
Sounds like possibly the EBPV is messing up, trying cleaning out the tube that goes from the exhaust manifold to the sensor. Its on the passenger side and it goes up to a sensor by the HPOP resivoir above the water pump. Also try to pull codes since any malfunction that has to do with the EBPV system is a soft code meaning it will store in the PCM but will not trip a SES light. Also check the VC harness's.
It could be a fuel delivery problem. Check the fuel pressure under load. I had a similiar problem with my truck i would floor it and it would putt along for a few seconds then pick right up. I tested the fuel pressure and it was low. I have the fuel tank mods done so it wasn't a clogged screen in the tank. I changed the fuel pump and it fixed the problem.
there are 1/8 inch pipe plugs in the front of the heads. The plugs have a square head. You will need a piece of hose, 0-100psi gauge, and fittings to adapt from the 1/8" NPT port in the head to the hose, from the hose to the gauge, some hose champs, and pipe thread sealent. Make sure the hose is long enough so you can duct tape the guage to the windshield in a place that you can see it. Just Make sure it does not block your view. Then go up a long hill and run it wot. If the pressure drops below 45psi ( i think this is the minium requirement) you are having a fuel delivery problem. 50-55 psi is normal for a non modified fuel system. In fact if it changes more than 5psi there is probably a problem. let us know what you find.
How long have you been running that 30 weight oil. It is only recommended in extreme cold climates for easier starting.
99% on the time the "romps" are either oil or fuel related. Get someone with a scanner to monitor ICP and IPR duty cycle during cranking and during that initial "putting" and get a mechanical gauge in to monitor fuel pressure.
Also how long does it take the oil pressure gauge on the dash to rise after cranking
Mine engine romped ever since it was new using dino oil, Delo 400 15w-40 .. change last year to Shell rotella synthethic 5w-40 and have never had a romp since.. I will never go back to dino.. You are really not using the right weight oil.. What brand of 30w are you using...
My 99.5 was doing the romp thing when started also, then got so bad as to quit running when stopped at a red light. Mech's said to change oil back to dino but that didnt help. I found out it was a bad connestion at the ICP sensor. Found that by doing the 10k mod and the connector was loose fitting. Any way havent had it miss a lick in 2 years now
scroll to the bottom of the page. Or try the local Surplus Store. One of the guys here said he took the fuel bowl plug to a local hydraulic shop and got the fitting to go in to the fuel bowl to a 1/8 NPT and got a gauge at the surplus store all for under $10.
