Does anybody make a roll cage for an 85 Bronco? I'm interested in getting one and then trying to add Tuffy's overhead console. Has anybody happened to do this in any other model of Big Bronco?
Jeff's Bronco Graveyard sells one. They sell a roll bar, and then the cage kit that adds onto the bar for the full deal. I installed just the bar in my '85. I like it, but it interferes with taking the top on and off. Not that I do regularly, but still, the bar fits very close along the bow of the roof (as it should) which makes access to the top bolts impossible without first unbolting the roll bar and moving it back a few inches. Other than that, I like it and still have full access to the rear seat. Just my $0.02 worth.
I uploaded a few pix to my gallery tonight. Click on "Gallery" under my sign-in for this post (over to the left). When the album opens, click on "'85 Bronco Pix". These are about the best I had on hand that show the roll bar..... hope they're of use to you!
A couple of notes..... supposedly, the bar can be assembled in the truck without the need to remove the top. Honestly, I couldn't see any way to do this. The "legs" do bolt onto the bar (assembly required), but the main "hoop" of the bar fits so tightly, I couldn't fit it in without unbolting the top and sliding it back a couple of feet. Once in, the legs (the angled supports) lacked a couple of inches on each side of having their mounting plates fit flush against the wheel wells. I'm sure this may have been a variance in manufacturing, and it was overcome by using a scissors jack and a piece of 4" X 4" to jack the legs apart, flushing the "feet" up with the wheel wells, where they were bolted down. Finally, per my previous post, put the bar together once it's in the truck, but bolt the top back on before bolting the bar in place. You'll need the clearance to put the bolts in across the ceiling bow. I imagine you can drill holes through and mount the bar over the top of the carpet, and this may be the easier thing to do. I chose to bolt it directly against the floor metal, and use a razor knife to cut the carpet the fit around the tube (and cover up the mounting bolts).
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Mar-02 AT 12:58 PM (EST)]is the rollcage you got from jeffs bronco graveyard the same one that is manufactured by smittybilt and shown at http://www.truckstuffusa.com/truckstuffusa/cagkitandint.html ?
also, does anybody have the "full cage kit" from jeffs bronco graveyard? if so, do you like it?
Honestly, I can't recall who made it. You may give them a call and ask who their supplier is. I really don't think I recognized the name of the manufacturer (as Smittybilt, Westin, Grizzly, etc....... one of the more popular ones), but it may just be that I wasn't paying attention. I looked on the bar, itself, but can't find the name stamped on it offhand. Sorry!
