Get a clear title from DMV. DMV should be able to look up the title with the VIN # and tell you if there are any lien holders on it.

Also...get a CARFAX if you are worried about the history of the vehicle.

I would imagine that it varies a bit from state to state. Here in NJ the title is normally stamped lien satisfied, dated and signed by the lienholder. If this is not done they will not register the vehicle for you. I would just check with the DMV in your state to be sure.

Well the vehicle is out of state so my DMV offers no help. Just want to make sure everything is on the up and up before driving my butt all over the place for nothing.

Ran a AutoCheck. Dont have it in front of me right now but,
Shows 6 transactions, all in the same town/state.
2 of the transactions show Lein #'s - (different #'s)
The selling dealers Town/State does not show as the last entry

Can the selling dealer fax me something?? or no??

Thanks

If you are buying from a dealership, I would have to assume ( I know you shouldnt) that the title would be clean or they wouldnt be able to sell it to you. If it is a major brand dealership this should not be an issue. If it is one of these used car places, then you have to be real careful. Maybe the seller can fax you a copy of a title or something that shows the truck is clear of any liens. If they dont want to be cooperative with you, then I would pass on dealing with them.

No Title, no Buy- end game.

If it's too good a deal to pass up (or be true)...aint no deal at all. Unless you're (or your brother in law is) a lawyer, and you got pictures he don't want you to share, you don't have the means to "fix it" if the title is clouded. You think dealing with DMV sucks for normal business? Go try straightening that out when the seller is no where is sight...Deal breaker!
