I have a problem that has been one of Fords worst problems, rust through body panels. This time its on my front windshield pilars.
Went to several body shops including Ford dealerships with body shops. Same story throughout, expensive $$$ quotes and no guarantees on re-rusting. Seem like they all have the same agenda, that is, to stay away from my 90 EB Bronco.
I think I will try to do the work myself and have it painted by a prof. shop.
#1 Any suggestion on how to go about it and prevent as much re-rusting as possible?
#2 If I make too much swiss cheese of the pilars, will I need to weld a stiffener inside, to make it strong again?
#3 Can rust on the pilars cause stress cracks near the edge of the winshield glass?
Rust weakens metal so without a doubt it'll help start cracks. Every Bronco I've seen from 80-90 or 92 has had cracks at the upper rear of the door opening. I understand Ford had a recall out on those at one time. I've got that problem on my 85 Bronc, but then its had some hard wheeling the past 7 or 8 years. As far as the rust, anytime you have it you'll do better to cut it out and weld in new metal, of course then you have the problem of not being able to get to the back side to spray paint or spray some type of rust prevention to stop it from happening again. All you can do is try to slow it down. I wish I could give you some good news but I haven't found anything that will really stop rust, just slow it down. My son's 78 has some rust at the upper front of the door opening and I'm still not sure how I'm gonna fix it. Later Whit
