i have a 1992 f-150 flareside 2wd 5.0 litre. it's in pretty good shape. i just got a bunch of stuff done to it. i want to have this truck for a while so i'm trying to keep it up. it's got 205 thousand miles on it but it still runs strong.
well, not too long ago, the exhaust pipe rotted off and fell in the middle of the street while i was driving. i'm talking a good 3 or 4 foot piece of pipe haha. inspection time is right around the corner so i have to get it fixed for it to pass. so i went to my local custom exhaust dealer and they said they could either put the regualr exhaust on there or i could get flow mast dual exhaust for about 150 dollars more. i would like to get the flow master but it's pretty pricey. is there any other type of exhaust mods you guys can suggest to me? something maybe a little cheaper? i read somewhere about "dump" exhausts? would you reccommend that and will it pass inspection and will it be cheaper?
any help would be appreciated.
thanks!
Does the truck still have the factory cats? If so... just put a turn down pipe behind them that extends just back of the cab. That's it.. no muffler.... no tailpipe.

i did mine with a length of straight pipe and than a 45 degree bend pointed out the side.
in tx you must have cat and muffler to pass inspection, dump exhaust is cool, its just a muffler with short tailpipes maybe 1 foot that point down, as long as the pipes are past the passenger cab you're good
Flaresider, Don't go with the stock exhaust, really restrictive. If you are worried about money, put into cosideration that a better flowing exhaust system will give you better gas mileage. Where the flowmaster systems get you is in the muffler cost, around 80 bucks a piece for 40 series. Id highly consider the flowmasters though, as well as investing in a high flow cat by magnaflow (they are pretty pricey but compared to the stock cats that you have they offer way better air flow). You may drop 350 bucks for a new exhaust, but trust me in the longrun it will be worth it, it sounds good, increases horsepower, and saves gas! I'm running a Super 40 Series muffler on my diesel, and it is holding up really well and withstands the high temps. Shop around, dont go to meineke, and get the best you can for the money you have!
like larry the cable guy says " haha now thats funny right there...GIT R DONE" Yah Thats funny....50 series flowmaster haha whats the point in paying for a flowmaster if you yourself cant even hear it inside the cab! Get the high flow cats, and a 40 series muffler, either the super 40, 40 delta flow, or original 40 series. Itll sound like a mustang, wich sound pretty darn good if you ask me!
depends on if he wants cheap dual exhaust or not there is plenty of options out there heck he could do what i did put long tubes on it and run true duals with flowmaster one chamber mufflers and no piping after the mufflers and no cats then it would sound way better than a mustang and also turn heads all the way down the road

better yet no muffler..
do hi-flow cats or just the regular cat that is on it (if still good) then duals no muffler or if you have to have muffler get glass packs. i think they consider those mufflers.
yah, long tupes n single chambers would be freakin nice! dhag, not sure about the whole glasspack thing. I know that glasspacks are good for high compression engines and some diesels but when you dont have that backpressure that stock engines need, you lose some performance. Gas mileage greatly increases on my friends chevy that has no mufflers but his low end torque dramatically decreased. If you have to have cheap, and want loud then get a glasspack but if you are willing to pay for a flowmaster or magnaflow muffler then you wont be disapointed at all. Headers and dual flowmasters would be mine and most others exhaust of choice.
I don't know you state or if you are talking about a emissions check or state. IT depends on state and inspection station (emissions or a state inspection I could have both if lived in different area state. ) about turn downs . Mosts state I have lived in have to have exhaust exit outside truck on side or out back. In Pa all emissions stuff has to be on truck , smog pump ,cat (but can be hi pro) and mufflers (if to load you fail ) You can get around it but You will have to replace old stuff every inspection (2 a year 1 emmis & 1 state)
Just get yourself a dual outlet muffler and have them (pipe shop) make pipe to go out side or back . It is cheaper than paying for the big name sat. Go to a local repair shop and ask what you have to have they will tell you or should if they want your work . Good luck

yea local muffler shop should know what the laws are. a good one will know what kind of sound you are after and budget if you just give them some info.
awesome! you guys rule! i just wish i knew more about mechanics than i do. i do know that i love my truck and want the best out of it. i have an appointment to get the flowmasters put on in a couple of days. it's going to be very pricey but hopefully worth it. especially if it gives me better gas mileage! i'm planning on getting them put directly behind the rear tires to a slant off to the side. thanks for all of your input!
