Here it is, 91 ranger 4.0L 5-speed manual trans. i bought a owners manual to make sure i had a fuse diagram and what not. then i wanted to know the maximum towing capacity of my truck. found a chart that told me to find the axel code on the side of the drivers door. the problem is that my trucks code was "92" but the book only had codes in the "80's". so i'm still at a loss for what ratio my rear axel has and what the maximum trailer weight of my truck is. if anyone understands what i'm talking about please help, and thanks!
Say it isn't so !!!!! couldn't be a worst gear for towing. It would of been nice if it was a 4:10 or a 3:73, even a 3:54 wouldn't be to bad, but a 3:08 and manual tranny, not so good.
Don't know about a 91 4.0L 5spd manual, but my book for a standard cab, 99 4.0L 5spd manual, with a 3.55 differential, shows it was rated to tow a 3660 trailer.
So with your 3.08 differential, you should be rated to tow less weight. My book dosn't show the 3.08 available in 99, so I don't rightly know how much less.
Hope this helps some in guesstimating & ballparking your allowable tow weight. As Wendell said, it's not the best ratio for towing.
But if your trailer isn't too big in the weght department & is less than the weight figure I posted for the 3.55, or if the trailer isn't too large in frontal area & you tug on mostly flat ground, you might be ok.
I've found stopping to be more of a challenge, than tugging!!!! lol
My mother had a 2wd Explorer with the auto, 4.0, and open 3.08 rear end.
It was rated for ~1700 lbs, I think. We never towed much with it, only thing I ever pulled was maybe 1200 lbs (JD 140 garden tractor on a 5x8 utility trailer) and it didn't do too bad. If you know what you're doing with the clutch and gearbox, hook up and go for a short ride. Pay attention to how it feels.
