I don't mean to sound like an idiot but I used to have these things on the side of my truck that looked like "whips." Today i decided i wanted to put some on again and was calling around the stores and nobody seemed to know what i was talking about. So i searched on the net and they definately can't be called that.
To give a better description they stick far up in the air and to me look like "whips." Ok that wasen't any better.
Anyone know what i'm talking about???

I believe those are to check clearance when you have stuff of the top of your truck. It hits before your roof and if you see it move you know not to go under that tunnel or whatever it is. I dont know their technical name but thats what I think they are.
BrokeCollegeGuythey stick up about 4 feet higher than the truck
They are fender finders...used on big rigs to gauge where the right (usually) front fender is from the drivers seat. They clamp on the leading edge of the right front fender.

Its a high gain antenna for either CB or HAM radio. (The pic you provided) If you want the look without the price go to one of those big hunting/fishing emporiums and buy a rod "blank" that people use to build their own fishing rods. Fab a bracket & go.
What you are probably talking about are 102 inch whips. They are C.B. antennas. Some people will poke holes in a tennis ball and slide them down the whips near the top of the bed to keep them from damaging the paint.

Bingo, somebody finally got it! You can order them at radio shack. They've got the mounts, springs, etc. to go with them. And if you cared, they've probably also got a radio to actually DO something with the antennas (antennae?)
Well thanks for all the help!!! This thread has definetaly brewed up some great ideas that could be done. They very likely could have been c.b. antennas.
I could have sworn when i bought them years ago they were for looks and hooked on the corner of the box behind the cab. They look like braided metal, but are very flexable and "whip" around. But i'll probably do something you guys suggested.
