I have a 99 expy with 121000 miles and lately after my 25 mile commute to work I have been noticing a burning smell coming from under the hood. I have seen no visible smoke so I can't pinpoint where it is coming from. It doesn't smell like oil it smells more like an old engine hot smell. Nothing out of the ordinary, it runs like a top an gets normal maintenance. Any ideas, it seems like it is more on the passengers side of the engine compartment and occasionally I can smell it through the heater vents after I turn the engine off.
Thats the problem, I cannot see any signs of leakage from where I can see, if it is leaking it's small. It's hard to see on that side of the motor. I am wondering if it is a major concern because I am getting ready to take a trip from NY to Myrtle beach in 2 weeks. If it's a minor nuisance leak I won't worry as much.
Valve cover gaskets? Check all the way around of both with an inspection mirror. Id bet that's the problem. If you can really call that a problem... The smell will scare you but with 120K miles a little oil coming out of the vavle cover gaskets is to be expected.
99 you say? Could be the head gaskets that were notoriously bad on the passenger side on some 5.4L. Mine were done on my 99 truck just before I bought it and have heard of numerous other occurances of bad headgaskets.
I'll check the starter wire, what would cause this. The only time it draws current is when it starts unless it is somehow shorting. Is the head gasket a big problem or can I "milk it" for awhile.

Depending wether or not your oil and coolant have mixed. My truck was just leaking oil and it was leaking down the side of the block. Just keep checking your oil or coolant to make sure they aren't mixing and the amount of fluid leaking. The previous owner told me it wasn't that bad of a leak but at the time it was a new truck and he hated seeing his new driveway get all oily.
No mixing of coolant and oil, yet. I have no spots on the driveway either. I'll take my chances and make the trek from NY to myrtle beach, I'll just watch the oil level. Thanks for the help.
