In Box Spare Tire Mount

I've searched the forum and I can only find a mention of this part. Most of the threads discuss the two types of rear mount options. I'd prefer to have it mounted where it has been.... just correctly. My truck came from the factory without a spare tire mount so the dealership installed an aftermarket in-box mount. I don't like it for several reasons:
  1. It uses carriage bolts through the top of the bed side.
  2. The bottom of the bracket isn't bolted to anything. It just rests on the sidewall of the bed. Over the last 34 years it has worn a groove in the sheetmetal. Also when you hit a bump and it bounces, it causes torque where it is bolted through to topside of my bed.
  3. Did I mention it's bolted through the topside of the bed?
  4. It's incorrect for the truck.
The nearby junkyards are terrible for these trucks. So, aside from a junkyard, does anyone know where I could find that part? I've never seen it for sale in any catalog. I know Dennis has one on his truck. It it bolted, riveted or welded to the bed?

Thanks

Bruce, I just bought an early dentside truck for parts. I'm pretty sure it has a spare tire mount in the bed near the left front corner. I'll get pics tonight if you think this'll help. Pretty sure also that it is the factory mount.

Yeah Mitch that would help. It will be nice to know if I've got to cut one out or unbolt it.

What did the dealer do, just add a piece of steel to the side of the bed, drill a few holes and mount the tire? WRONG!

The correct bed mounted spare tire bracket used for all 1964/79 trucks (there are several depending on wheel size and yr models) mounts to the upper bed side with three sheet metal screws. The lower section has a flange that is mounted to the truck bed with four sheet metal screws. The bracket is made so a carriage bolt slips through the bracket from the backside (closest to the bed) and goes through a lug hole in the wheel, a metal plate and a wheel lugnut keep the tire tight, the remaining thread may either have a wing nut, or a lockable device to deter theft.

D3TZ-1405-A .. Bed Spare Tire Mount Bracket~~fits all 1973/79 F100/250's. (F350's are different)

These are hard to find, you might check our sponsors here at FTE, or try Green Sales in Ohio (800-543-4959)

Here are a couple of the photos I took before teardown. I hope they aren't too large. I'm posting them from the second gallery I just created. NumberDummy, it's not just a piece of steel they bolted on, but it's not far from that. It had a sticker with a company name on it, before I sandblasted it off that is. I do have a photo of that also. Also, I've checked several of the sponsors with no luck. Maybe these will give you a better idea of what I have. Obviously, I don't want rusty carriage bolts through my bed when I'm done.

My '73 F100 2WD in bed tire carrier (factory/standard) is different from yours, Brewski. It's attached by 3 bolts at the top from the inside vertical lip and at the bottom it's bolted to the bed floor. The long carriage bolt through the rim is the same. LMC Truck has 'em.

The one picture above looks like the flareside mount

This is the in box mount used right thru at least 1979

Thanks Dennis. Obviously, the one I want is for the Styleside. It looks like it's held on with screws. That is potentially good news. Maybe I won't have to cut one off another truck to get it. It is supposed to be painted body color isn't it?

Yes, Mine was silver.

I removed mine when I built the sleeping bed in the back.

While we are on spare tires, does anyone know what kind of wheel/tire came on the spare tire from factory for a '79 F250 2wd? The same one found on all four tires? I have the standard spare tire location, under the bed below the gas tank. It's missing the wheel.

So it would be 9.50x16.5 on a 3/4 ton F250?

The top photo in Dennis' picture is the same one I used for describing what it is and how it mounts. They are black, but could be painted.
