motor for an '86

I have a '86 Bronco with a 302 and ita rappen' pretty bad from losing oil pressure.
First question is this motor salvageable? will a new oil pump be worth it? The air cleaner has oil on from blowby, it that cause for scrapping the entire motor? Will the lifters be unuable now after running it without oil pressure?
Second question - What motors are a direct swap? 85-????

Thanks!

Depends on your tranny. The easiest would be a 351 windsor. But a 460 will fit without to much trouble. I just rebuilt the 302 in my 86 and kept it pretty much stock except for headers and a few other things. I have a AOD tranny on this motor and I am not pleased with the results. I am looking at building up a 460 with an Art carr AOD tranny and some kit parts from L & L products. I had to keep the 302 stock because the computer on this model does not like any extras and to change out all the fuel injection and ignition was not worth the 1500 to 2 grand it would cost to replace them. Hope this helped if you want any more info just ask. Rick Jaeger

Your '86 should have the EFI302.Any EFI302 from 1986-1996 would bolt in.Of course there were changes over the years. If you have the AOD transmission,I'd stick with a '86-'90 EFI302 from a truck,or Bronco.Ford never offered the AOD behind the 351,or the 460.Either of these engines can be swapped into your Bronco, but you'll need to put a C-6,or E4OD behind it.If you go with the E4OD,you'll need a EFI351,or EFI460 to work with it.The C-6 was put behind both EFI&carbed versions of both these engines. The 351&460 have different bellhousing bolt patterns,so keep that in mind, too. You have a lot of choices you can pick from,it all depends what you want your Bronco to do,and how much money you're willing to spend.I've seen a lot of '80-'86 style Broncos with 460-4V&C-6s swapped into them. Many aftermarket companies make swap kits for this type of swap.Good luck.

I just went through that with my 86 302EFI. Similar symptoms to what you described. Oil in the breather, lots of crancase pressure from blowby. Oil coming out everywhere. I had 214,000 on the original engine ( I know, I bought it new).

I took the engine out and took it to a reputable machine shop. They rebuilt it for about $900. They bored it .030 over and new pistons, etc. I added a 3" exhaust system, K&N filter and Jacobs Off-Road ignition. Runs really good. I also have the AOD. I am happy with it.

Look at the home page of Ford enthusiasts for the "overdrive conversion" tech article it tells how an AOD tranny will fit behind a 460 it also fits a 351 windsor because ford small blocks have the same bolt pattern. It won't fit behind a 351 cleveland though because that has a big block bolt pattern. My 302 runs fine staying on the road and no hard work but to have some fun offroad and to have plenty of power to tow I would think of doing more than just a stock rebuild of a 302 or switch to a bigger motor. SBV1,
Did your rebuilt burn a little oil when you first got it in? I have the same year engine and I have put on 500 miles (just changed the oil also) and it is burning a little oil. I was just wondering if that was normal during the breakin period.

86 XLT FULL-FULL size
