I have a very loose steering wheel on my 87 Bronco. I have traced it down to my power steering gearbox. I was looking at my Chilton manual, and I found a section that says you can adjust the looseness in the steering gearbor by playing with an adjusting screw. Has anyone done this and if so can you tell me how? Thanks
It very easy. On top of the steering box is a nut with a slotted screw in the middle. Loosen the nut and the use a screwdriver to tighen down the screw. You may want to have the truck running when you do this so you can cycle the steering full left and full right a couple of times. Keep tightening the screw until you get the amout of play you like just keep cycling the steering after you get it to where you like it just tighten the lock down nut back up and you are set. Hope this helps if you have any other question just ask. Rick Jaeger
I have an 86 and I think they are the same. I think the Chilton has a procedure for adjusting the play. There is a large headless bolt with a slot in it and a locking nut on the steering gear box. You have to loosen the nut and turn the bolt clockwise. Check the manual but I think the proper proceudre is to remove the tie rods from the pitman arm and using an inch/pounds torque wrench on the steering wheel to measure how tight to make it. Again, check the manual. I know the Haynes manual has the procedure.
