I have a 1992 F150 (six cylinder, manual transmission, 110k miles) which has such a frustrating mechanical problem that I'm about to just get rid of it. It has been to the shop three times and still has the same problem. Some days it runs fine, other days it doesn't. When it does not run, it starts for a few seconds then it dies with lots of grey smoke, like it is flooded. The check engine light is on when it is have running problems. I try it multiple times over a couple day period and it does the same thing (no cranking). I have it hauled to the mechanic and it'll fire right up and run great for a crank or two but a day or so later it is back to the cranking problem. The mechanic has been able to get the truck to mess up a time or two but not with any consistency. This is my work truck and I need it to be somewhat dependable. I am at wits end and my mechanic is scratching his head. He says there is no error code to look at. Any ideas?
And it will tell you how to read them then you can tell your mechanic what is wrong with it.
I do not know if I understand your terminology on the crank and no cranking. I take it you mean you have starter, solenoid and battery problems also.
If so I would clean all the connections at the battery, solenoid and ground.
Watch out for the small gauge ground wires at the negative battery lead....corrosion migrates down the wire. If there is a quick disconnect on these smaller wires....another problem area !!
