Voltage Gauge reading high

Voltage Gauge reading high
Hey all, the past few months or so the volt gauge on my 92 5.0 has been reading high but not quite past the normal range. The last 2 days it has been almost touching the red line near the number 18. Is this a sign my alternator is going bad, I'm assuming the voltage regulator is internal? If not, what should I look into. Haven't made any changes to anything at all that would cause a high draw so I need some help. Thanks...

Take a multimeter and check the battery voltage w/engine running. Once you know the actual output you;ll know if it's the gage or the alt. If the output is too high It'll be the regulator. It's internal but I've replaced them before, fairly simple job. You have to remove the alt to replace the reg so, if it's the original alt you may want to go ahead and replace it. Then you'd have new alt for the next 15 years, and if you want electronics upgrades in the future you could go with a higher amperage/output set up.
