I've been reading a lot of posts about people going to the dealer to have their truck "flashed". How do you know when it needs a new flash? Is my dealer supposed to contact me? Or do I need to go in myself?
My truck has 62,000 miles and the only part ever replaced was my EGR valve at 30,000 mi. But besides that, no problems what so ever. (Knock on wood.) So if it ain't broke, why fix it, right? Or do I need these updated "flashes" done to my truck?
Whether or not you want the latest updates are up to you. Typically, a service center won't flash your PCM unless you are having a problem that a flash update will fix or unless there is a saftey issue involved (such as the flame-thrower exhaust problem on the 2008 6.4L). Also, sometimes a tech has to perform a flash update before they can proceed with specific troubleshooting on some problems. On the latter, you won't have a choice.
do not flash unless you need to. and make a point to tell your service manager/consultant you do not want the flash cuz some will do it without your permission. like in my case. lol
