Exp 98-'00???
I've been reading about the '98's-'00's, and just trying to figure out the differences. Price wise, it's looking like '98 or '99, and I can't see there was a ton of change in these model yrs. Anything I am missing? Is one preferred over another?
A couple specific questions:
- was the air suspension available in '98 as well as '99? I am a bit confused on the differences in air suspension/auto-level offered on the 4x2 vs the 4x4. Does the suspension self adjust (or manually) on the 4x4 depending on load, or is that just the 4x2? I will do some towing, so like the idea of air bags to level it out - is it a good option, or prone to problems?
- what year did the auto-climate control become available, and was it only on the Eddie Bauer versions?
Thanks for any insight.
My other vehicle is a Ford Excursion, which I love, but, somehow, my wife has mostly commandered driving it

PI heads were introduced in '99 and give 30 or so more HP so I wouldn't consider any older models. As for the air suspension, do a search, it's one of the most talked about topics around here....and problem prone.
PI - 30hp is nice, but not if at the risk of a leaking head gasket:

Has this been a problem for alot of the '99-'01's? If so, I'd forego the extra power in favor of one less (big) thing to service and stick w/ a '98. If not a big deal, I'm all for extra hp.
I asked on the air suspension b/c I read alot of contradictory/unclear statements in regards to what is offered on the 4x2 vs 4x4. Seeing if someone could give a definitive reply - believe me, I've been enjoying searching & reading here. I guess I could always just install an aftermarket set of bags, and be done as well.
Another question - on the '98 & '99's - what is the story with 2wd vs AWD - was the AWD an option, or just available on certain models or yrs? I think I would prefer plain old 2WD, w/ 4H & 4L to save on mileage and complications - or is the AWD that much better? Can you manually over-ride it to 2WD?
Thanks for any replies to all the questions.
You never know how the person before you cared for their vehicle. The most important thing about a used vehicle is whether or not the person performed routine maintenance. Oil changes every 9k is HARDLY a reason to think you'll do better with a 2000 model, than a problem prone 97 or 98 or 99.
Good Luck in your hunt!
On the air suspension I installed the airlift bags with an onboard inflation system and have been happy with that.
Auto climate control was available since the Expedition's inception, but was limited to the Eddie Bauer, at least during the '97 to '02 model years.
I also agree prob the single most important issue is what kind of previous owner (s) maintained the vehicle.
As soon as I am done w/ the ins. co., I will start looking hard.
