Rear drive shaft

Recently had my rear shaft rebuilt, the guy put the front joint 180 degrees out. I now have a vibration at 72 mph. I took it back, and he said it didn't matter, as long as I have the splines lined up where they were. Could this be the cause?

What do you mean the "front joint?" Don't you have a CV? What year truck? Anyway, the joints in the CV will line up because they have to, it won't go together any other way. The rear joint at the diff yoke should be "in phase" meaning it should sit the same as the front two joints; you should be able to draw a line thru the center of one of the caps and if you ran that line straight up the d/s it should also go thru the center of the two caps up in the CV. It's not an issue of the splines lining up unless the slip shaft is keyed (some are but I've never seen it, and some appear to be because they have a missing tooth but it doesn't matter). Hope that kinda answers your question. If nothing else, pull it apart at the diff, slide the slip shaft apart and rotate 180 degrees, see if this solves your problem, but first be sure it's in phase.

Its a 95, and I don't think its called a cv, I believe its a cardin type. Any way the front flange part that bolts to the transfer case is out 180 degrees with the rest of the joint.I marked my splines when I took it apart, so I know they are right, as is my back universal. Also the retainers for the universal caps don't fit all the way in the grooves, its as if the universal is to wide. Let me know what you think, thanks.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Mar-02 AT 12:05 PM (EST)]Technically double cardan, yes. CV, constant velocity, same difference. Cheap u-joints will frequently not fit properly and not allow the retaining clips to fully engage. Otherwise it's the wrong part. As for the 180 degrees out, I'm just really stupid 'cause I can' see what you're saying. A pic would be worth a thousand words. Good luck!

EDIT: of course now that I think about it your '95 may have slip joint at the t-case rather than in the d/s.

You seem to know your stuff about drive shafts. My 96 Bronco jerks or thumps from a dead stop, just like a bad u joint but they seem to be fine. I have been told the shaft telescopes due tosuspension changes & lubing the shaft will correct this. I can't find a grease fitting. Whats the real deal?

Lots of posts on this site about this problem, along with the solution to it, which involves taking the shaft apart and greasing the splines by hand to correct it (the grease will take up the slack and slop in the driveline that you are experiencing). Do a search, you'll find more detailed information.
