rear axle size

Hello all, I am going to be adding a locker to the rear on my 81 bronco. I am pretty sure that it is the original 8.8", but not positive. I've searched all over for info on how to tell w/o pulling it apart, and can't come up with anything. So, if anyone can tell me how you can determine the size, please let me know. Also, I am giving serious considration to using a spool instead of a locker. The only on road driving I do is to get to the trails, and I would say I don't put more than 1500 miles a year on it. Any advice? I am leaning towards the durability and affordability of the spool, especially since I don't really care about on road performance. Thanx guys.

'81 should have a 9". To be certain just look under the back of your truck. If the rear of the housing is one piece w/no bolts it's a 9". 9" has a center section that drops out from the front once you remove the d/s. If it's an 8.8 it'll have a rear diff cover w/bolts. IOW, it's all about the diff cover

I don't need to go out there, I know it has no cover. I never knew that that was the way to tell. Awsome, thanx.
