You can get a well used up truck in that range for under a grand...maybe less if you hit the right deal..keep your eye on ebay.

oh, you can find some crap down here to...especially early 80's. I bought a 83 bronco for $600 or so and a '77 in decent shape with a flatbed for 1500. And the '77 is a much better truck. you can see the bronco in my gallery after bodywork and paint...rebuilt the windsor and it runs might fine with the 289 4v heads.

When do you want to buy and which of our states are you by. If Montana is close i know you can get a truck here in the 1k range that you can work on. My kid bought a driveable '87 with a great body, tired engine that ran ok and soe extras for 1200 a little over a year ago....that doesn't happen every day but it can happen.

also...why not a 70's thats tougher, has better engines typically and more appreciable?

A 73-76 with a 390 or something...a mans truck!
