Hey fellas, I just bought an 88 f150 with a 4.9 EFI. It started right up with no problems and I drove it for a good hour or so. It started sputtering and barely running. If I run her up to about 3500 for 30 seconds or so it will run fine for about another 30 seconds and then go back to running like crap. The inline fuel pump runs for a while whether the key is on or not but goes off after about 4 minutes or so (engine not running). If I let her sit for an hour or so I can start it and it will run fine for 10 minutes or so then start running like crap again. Some help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellas.

Thats one suggestion, anymore? Come on guys, I really need some help. I replaced th plugs, plug wires, dist cap, and rotor. I used either on every vacuum port, line, and canister but no leaks. I was thinkin maybe a fuel issue but seems how it runs fine for a while, it couldnt be pressure, could it? Any and all suggestions would help. Thanks again.

Not to be a jerk, but you have a few systems to trouble shoot here. The manual, with methodical elimination is quicker and easier than throwing money at it.
The runs fine till it warms up sound like a sensor going out of range. But, you know what? I don't know simple things like fuel pressure, compression, manifold vacuum etc. I bet I have more guesses than you have money...at least that's the way it works for me.
Just don't panic, it hinders clear thinking which is a necessity in trouble shooting. If getting frustrated, take a break and come back to it in a bit.
I'm thinking its not a module problem, usually when they go they go out all together.
Replace the fuel filter if you haven't already. Almost nobody ever replaces them, so odds are it needs to be replaced anyway. Check it when you take it out by blowing backwards through it and see if there is a lot of dirt/rust/water in it.
If that doesn't work I would get a shop manual and start testing the sensors, fuel pressure, etc. Good luck!
Ryan, Moonley may be on target. first you need to tell us if it is running rich or lean. lean would be the fuel filter of the pressure regulator. rich would indicate the temp sensor. does it blow black smoke as it clears. also you can pull a plug and check the color. do this before you go out and buy any parts.
good luck
How's the gas tank vent. Some times the vents get pluged. Take the gas cap off and see if it changes anything. I had trouble with sensors on my 85, w/ the feed back carb. You have a early EFI motor. Humm...19 year old sensors and wiring/connections?
Well the reason I didnt check the filter first thign is because when I went to pull it, it looked brand new. I just pulled it and nothing bad came out, its not really plugged either. The main thing is hat it was on backwards, the inlet was the side running to the engine. I am going to get a new filter, and put it on RIGHT then well see.If no good, I will try venting the tank and trouble shooting.
I had a similiar situation with my ford explorer. It would start fine but then idle irratically. and tried to die on me. I turned out I needed to replace my MAF (mass airflow sensor) at the intake. It cost approx $90 and fixed the issue.
Months later I also had some other issues with irratic idle. I heard some high sucking noise under the hood. and found a vacuum port that was wide open. I couldn't find a loose hose anywhere. so I assumed it had some cap or plug prior. I sealed it with a screw. and it worked fine.
If you have a manual it shold tell you what voltage the MAF should be running at and use a voltmeter to read if its out. Mine was.
Hope it helped.
