I'm going to be headed from Seattle area to Texas-ish in the next few months. I'm on the road about 95% of the time, so it's pretty much sat. My wife starts it about every third day, and drives to the store about once a week or so. It had a tune up maybe 3000 miles ago. What should be done in the months building up to my voyage?
Change your oil about a week BEFORE you go. That way if something is going to leak, better to have it leak at home not out in the middle of BFE.
Vital fluid level checks.
tune up.
Tires, check tread for even wearing, cracks in the sidewall, proper inflation, Balance. (remember, your tires are going to be exposed to operating temps they never have before living in the N.W.)
Also make sure your spare is in excellant condition and properly inflated.
Have A/C checked! Your gonna need it!!!!!!!!!!
Or do it they way most of us do, Throw the toolbox in the back, Kids in the front (or Maybe the otherway around), And haul gas!!!!!!
If your spare is on any kind of rack or support underneath,,,better at least take it out once,,,better off to leave it in the bed if possible. Underneath is SUCH a pain in unhappy circumtansces. I needed mine out once and had to "TORCH" it outa there it was so rusted(and it never went back there either) Another thing,IF you have a buddy with another spare that will fit,,,borrow it,probably wont need it,, but what if. (can always use two spares on a road trip) I blew out two tires within 5 miles one time,,,couldnt have been a worse day and a walk down the highway rolling a tire or carrying it is NOT ever going to be fondly remembered. IF you do have to use your spare, get a scab put on your rim right away,,for another spare. And yes throw the tool box in the back, just for giggles,,,then you wont need them!!! Make sure your jack(s) and lug wrench fit and are okay! A hydralic jack gets you outta tough spots sometimes, as well as a couple blocks, make that a few blocks for raisng the jack, chocking tire or whatever, even driving a flat up on so your jack fits!!!
