first off don't flame me for this ;-) really. dont.
put on the edelbrock perfomer intake w/ edelbrock 600cfm carb, msd dizzy and coil, lokar throttle cable, bracket, and kickdown cable
runs awesome and sounds great...but the tranny won't shift out of first when i test drive (to test the kickdown)..i installed as per the included instructions..however, i think that the cable on the tranny side should be mounted, not on the pan with the ball pointing at the front of the truck, but where the shifter brace mounts, with the ball of the cable pointing toward the back of the truck...forget all this stuff cause it makes no damn sense i know.
what's keepin my tranny from shifting out of first? ive got the aod, so i dont think it can be anything electrical like the aode...also, i can't find any vac lines to the tranny like i've seen on chevys...
With and AOD you don't have a kickdown cable. What you have is a throttle valve (TV) cable. It takes the place of the vacuum signal that was used in the "C" series transmissions. Correctly installed, the TV cable actuates a valve which sends pressure to the valve body proportional to throttle opening. Read up and verify for yourself because I'm relying on memory here, but I think if you hook up an oil pressure gauge to the transmission test port you should see a jump from 1psi to about 15psi after the throttle cable moves about 5/16". Make sure this cable is set correctly or your transmission won't last long.
Definately check that cable adjustment, the TV lever rotates counter clockwise viewed from the outside as the throttle opens. At closed throttle it should be close to the stop in the clockwise direction. The best way to set it is with a pressure gauge. From your description, it sounds like you have it all the way to full throttle keeping the line pressure all the way up. If you can't get a pressure gauge, get it working right then shorten the cable until the shifts are firm, but not too firm, you shouldn't need to back off the throttle to get into OD above roughly 40 mph. Good luck with the adjustments.
ya the cable was mounted backwards on the tranny end....easy fix...now im tweaking the length of the cable to get it to shift where i like
btw where should my gears be shifting? i come out of 1st around 20-25 and come out of 2nd at over 40....just seems a little high to me...also shifts hard
want to flush the tranny and change the filter, will this help?
Ok, sounds like you're getting there. Slacken the cable a little, the late hard shifts are an indication that the cable is too tight. The 2-3 shift on an AOD is always a little hard as it is going to a direct mechanical connection. you are just going to have to keep tweaking it until it shifts smoothly, but doesn't slip. 3-4 should be around 40 mph. On fluid change, be sure to drain the converter, it is a 7/16" hex head pipe plug between two of the converter bolts.
