Well, Thank the maker I had a starter with a warranty. My 1988 has been starting faithfully all winter no real hard cranks just cold weather. Started it in the morning no hesitation or signs of slowing down. Went to the drug store came out and turned the key and it acted like the neutral safety switch was an issue. Moved the shift lever and spun right over just like normal. Went to leave the shop that night and nothing just me the shop cat and the solenoid clicking on the fender. Tried giving the starter a tap with a hammer and still nothing. Shop Cat gives me a look like "Well"? (Cats are like women don't have any idea but seem to be able to rub it in at the right moment). Put another reman starter in spun over just like the last one. (Then proceeded to flip the shop cat off like he could care). Anyone have a starter just quit with not a hint of trouble? All the rest just got slower this was my first.
Could be a couple things, fender relay getting weak and starter solenoid not getting enough jolt, batteries are not up to snuff or starter cables are poor. If the relay is OEM that would be preventative mainenance......changing it.
I would agree if I was not a bit maintenance crazed. I have replace all of that stuff in the MAY 06 refurb of the old girl. Batteries are new 1100 Deka's x2 November 06. Solenoid was new November 06. Cables are #3's all the way around with new ground cables. I am using a 10 gauge trigger wire and religiously once a month cables get checked and resprayed or cleaned. But after I wrote this thread I tortured my parts guy and he said there has been some trouble with their remans brushes wearing to quick yada yada.
