Unstaible idle
Hey whats up im kinda knew and was wondering i have an 1987 f150 with a 302 and when i start it has a very unstable idle and sometimes dies, if i warm it up than shut it off than start it, it idles bad, when i drive for a while than stop it idles ok any ideas,

Check for codes. You can get an Autozone to read them for free, you can get a code reader for about $30, or you can follow the link and do it yourself for nothing. Don't buy any parts until you check for codes. You can spend alot of money guessing what parts to buy.

Just a couple of ideas you may want to try. Clean the trottle body and the Idle Air Control Valve. Mine had excessive carbon build up (1991 F150 5 Ltr). I removed the entire trottle body and cleaned it with Barrymans B12 using a tooth brush for those hard to reach places. I also soaked the IACV in Berrymans overnight (just the valve not the electronic solonoid) and cleaned it also. This has soved my starting & idle problems with the truck. I assumed you have changed your air filters and PVC valve. Also check the IACV electrically to be sure it has about 9-11 ohms impedance. Good luck.
