Hey there, i have had my truck for 2 years and the 240 died on me so i got another from picknpull. I'm looking to put in a 302 or 351. I don't know if i can or not. How do i do it though? could you guys point me in the right direction?
Thanks guys
302 or 351 is almost a dropin, if you use the perches from a later year truck.
The question is why? An F250 is ment to haul weight, not haul a$$. its big, its beefy, and it wants a big torque motor at low RPMs. the 302/351 engines just aren't ment for low RPM torque. An "FE" series 352 or bigger V8 would be a torque monster if you want V8 Horsepower too. If you want light and good gas milage, an I6 300 is a torque monster, easily outpreforming the 302 on the bottom end.
The other down side of the 302/351 block is embarasment. I know I catch flack for saying this, but every time I see someone open the hood on a slick, and I see that cute little engine sitting in that big engine bay, I have to bite my tongue to not ask them what it will be when the motor grows up.
to answer 66beater, my stepdad recently had to put down his '64 f250. This truck had done more work than any truck i had ever seen. My 66 was a work truck to, when i got it i still did hauls and move people around. I want to restore it and some speed would be good. I am still wondering about the 300 vs the 302/351. She will still do some work but i want her to more of a crusier.
First and foremost!! welcome to FTE. Many knowledgeable and helpful members with varying opinions, which is why the forum is soooo great. Could not have restored and added upgrades to 65 w/out members help.
Purchased 65 F100 from friend who had swapped the 6 cyl. for 302. Said used same bell housing but needed the 302 flywheel and engine perches. Not sure about the 351. Bought the truck from him in 74 after he used it as his work horse on daily basis. I continued to abuse it until about 3 yrs ago when I restored, it to include few upgrades and engine rebuild. It never ceases to amaze me, to this day, how much hauling and abuse it continues to take. The gas milage is also a plus, have another 65 F100 with the 390ci, the hog. On the other hand, the 66 F250 w/ the 6 cyl. is build for rugged heavy duty use, and if intend to use for that purpose may want to consider rebuilding or replacing the engine, certainly would be less time consuming. Anyhow, thought would add my $.02.
Thanks! thats all i really needed to know. We just got a 60 f100, that will be the next project. Do you know anything about power brake conversions? I really don't think i need to do that.
Not sure if referring to source for 66 or the 60. Here is an article may find helpful on upgrade for 65-66, does not apply for unibody models. Lots of info on the upgrade if run a search in the 61-66 forum under 'disc brake'.

300 VS 302, well the first real diffrence is 2 cubic inches. thats a 0.6% diffrence. And to get that extra 0.6% diffrence, you have 30% more moving parts, meaning 30% more chances for breakage, 30% more internal resistance, and less efficancy.
Also, 6 cylinder Inline engines have a better sequince on the crank for making torque, especialy at low RPM. They also balance better naturaly for less wear, and have a flatter power band starting very low on the RPM range. Thats why everything from Big container ships, to freight haulers, all the way down to jeeps use Inline motors when they need torque.
V8s are less efficent, and tend to have a peaked powerband making very little of there total power at the bottom end of the RPM range. What they do have is good peak Horsepower, and they sound cool.
