Im considering buying a Bronco here in the next few weeks/months and am looking at the 87, because of the crossover parts its got. I like the body style more than the previous generation, and also the fact that the 351's can be had with a carb rather than efi. What Ive not been able to find yet is if Ford ever back this motor up with a (worthwhile) auto trans. with overdrive. And if no, is it that hard to swp one in?

If I remember correctly,the 1987 Bronco,when fitted with the 351 H.O.,could only have a three-speed C-6 automatic behind it.The AOD was only put behind EFI302 engine via the factory.I know a place called GearVendors offers a C-6 tranny,fitted with an overdrive gear.That might be one option to seriously consider.You might try to get some info on the late-model E4OD automatic.EFI351 engines got these via the factory starting in late '89-early'90.Hope this helps.

Yep, it should have the C6. You could drop an AOD behind it but the AOD has a questionable reputation at best. You could install an E4OD, which also has a bad rep depending upon who you talk to (personally I think they're plenty durable, just very expensive to rebuild when the time comes), but you'd have to get a stand-alone controller for the trans as it needs a computer of some sort. Baughmann engineering (I think) sells such a thing.
